Can a machine state what your business is without guessing?
Structured data is the part of your page written for a parser rather than a reader: what kind of organisation this is, what it sells, what else on the web is the same entity. When it is missing an engine infers those facts from prose, and inference is where a company gets described as something adjacent to what it does.

Do this on your own site
A free tool. It needs your domain and nothing else.
Enter your domain. It reports which of the facts an engine looks for are present and parse without error, and which are absent.
Schema CheckerReading the result
Including what it does not tell you, which is the half most readings get wrong.
Treat this as hygiene rather than as a lever. A controlled test found no citation lift from schema on its own, so a page that passes has removed an obstacle rather than gained an advantage. The value is that it stops an engine describing you wrongly, and being described wrongly is a failure that no amount of later work corrects.
Terms used in this lesson
Each one is defined in full in the glossary, with the reason it matters to measurement.
Next: Whether you are named
When a buyer asks an assistant, does your name come up?
