What is an unlinked mention?
An unlinked mention is a reference to a brand, product, or person in an article that doesn't include a hyperlink back to the source.
News and trade coverage mentions brands by name constantly without linking to them, a product gets named in a roundup, a founder gets quoted, a company gets referenced as an example, all without a single clickable link attached.
These used to be treated as a secondary concern, worth chasing down mainly to convert into a link for the ranking value it would pass. AI systems synthesizing an answer often draw on what's actually said about a brand, not on whether the sentence containing that claim carries a link, so unlinked mentions can shape how a model frames a brand even though they were previously written off as low priority.
That doesn't mean every unlinked mention needs to become a linked one. Spending outreach effort chasing every mention into a backlink can cost more than it returns, when getting mentioned in more places at all, link or no link, is what actually matters for the AI case.
