What is SERP volatility?

SERP volatility is a measure of how much search engine results pages shift day to day for a given set of keywords, traditionally used to detect when Google has rolled out an algorithm update.

SEO tools built entire tracking products around this idea: watch enough keyword rankings closely enough, and a spike in how much they are reshuffling is a reliable early signal that something changed in how the search engine ranks pages, often before Google confirms an update publicly.

AI-generated answer boxes complicate that signal, because a volatility spike can now be caused by something that has nothing to do with ranking algorithm changes: a query that previously returned ten blue links suddenly triggers an AI-generated summary instead, reordering or replacing what used to be tracked as the results. A tool built to detect ranking algorithm shifts can register that as volatility, when what actually happened is that the format of the page changed underneath it, a distinct phenomenon that older volatility metrics were never built to separate out.
