What is a follow-up query?
A follow-up query is a question asked right after an AI answer that only makes sense because of what was already discussed, like asking what about for small businesses right after asking about a broader category.
The engine carries context from the earlier turns forward, so the follow-up doesn't need to restate the topic, and the answer it produces, along with whatever sources it cites, can be completely different from the sources cited in the first answer of the same conversation.
This matters for anyone testing how a brand shows up in AI answers: comparisons, edge cases, and objections tend to concentrate in the follow-up turns rather than the opening question. A domain that never appears in the first answer to a broad question can still surface two or three turns later once the conversation narrows down to the specific angle that page actually covers. Testing only single-shot prompts, one question with no follow-up, understates how often a site actually gets cited across a real conversation.
