What is Google Gemini?
Google Gemini is Google's standalone conversational AI app, separate from AI Overviews and AI Mode, which are the AI features built into Google Search itself.
Gemini is a chat app people go to directly, similar in shape to ChatGPT or Claude. It's easy to conflate with AI Overviews and AI Mode because they can share underlying Google models, but they are different products with different placements. Gemini is a destination app, while AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside the regular Google Search results page.
The practical distinction for AI visibility is that these surfaces are tracked and cited differently. A page that shows up well in AI Overviews is being pulled into the Search results page a person already searched from, while a Gemini citation happens in a separate app the person opened on purpose, with much lower overall query volume than Search itself.
The misunderstanding to avoid is assuming optimizing for one automatically covers the other. They're related by parent company and underlying models, not by shared crawl behavior or shared placement.
