Do press releases actually get your brand into ChatGPT answers?

6 min read

You just spent $800 on a wire distribution service to publish a product release, hoping ChatGPT would start recommending your company. A vendor or agency told you that broadcasting your news across hundreds of media sites would feed the AI models and get your brand into search answers.

Three weeks later, you run queries in ChatGPT, and your brand is still absent.

Paying for wire distribution to influence AI search engines is almost entirely a waste of money. Understanding why requires looking at how answer crawlers evaluate syndicated text, how generative models pull real-time web citations, and how earned media differs from paid distribution.

How answer crawlers process syndicated wire content

AI engines do not read the web the same way a human reads a newspaper. When a user asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a question that triggers a web search, the system relies on specialized answer crawlers to fetch live web pages.

These answer crawlers operate under tight latency and token budgets. When you distribute a press release through a wire service, that exact same block of text gets published on dozens or hundreds of regional news sites, financial portals, and trade blogs.

Search indexers and answer crawlers actively collapse identical text blocks to prevent redundancy. If 200 websites publish the identical press release, the answer crawler selects at most one authoritative version or ignores the entire set of duplicates altogether. It looks for distinct, high-authority reporting rather than boilerplate corporate announcements.

It is critical to distinguish between training crawlers and answer crawlers here. Blocking or allowing a training crawler affects whether your website is included in future base model training runs months from now. It has nothing to do with whether an answer engine cites your website today.

Training crawlers ingest broad web data to build model parameters:

  • GPTBot collects training data for OpenAI models.
  • ClaudeBot collects training data for Anthropic models.
  • Google-Extended collects training data for Gemini models.

Answer crawlers fetch real-time search context to construct immediate citations:

  • ChatGPT-User and OAI-SearchBot fetch live context for ChatGPT.
  • Perplexity-User and PerplexityBot fetch live context for Perplexity.
  • Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User fetch live context for Claude.

In our crawler index updated on 2026-08-08, we analyzed a panel of 54,082 domains, of which 33,670 returned a readable robots.txt file. Across those 33,670 domains, 5,497 block at least one AI crawler, and 2,576 block at least one answer crawler specifically.

Looking at individual agents across those 33,670 domains, site owners treat training crawlers and answer crawlers very differently:

  • GPTBot (training) is blocked by 5,080 domains.
  • ClaudeBot (training) is blocked by 4,603 domains.
  • Google-Extended (training) is blocked by 4,275 domains.
  • PerplexityBot (search) is blocked by 2,147 domains.
  • ChatGPT-User (search) is blocked by 2,074 domains.
  • OAI-SearchBot (search) is blocked by 1,579 domains.
  • Perplexity-User (search) is blocked by 1,402 domains.
  • Claude-SearchBot (search) is blocked by 1,400 domains.
  • Claude-User (search) is blocked by 1,384 domains.
  • Googlebot is blocked by 610 domains.

Even among active Y Combinator companies, blocking behavior is widespread. In a census of 4,226 active Y Combinator companies conducted on 2026-08-07, 3,755 domains had readable robots.txt files, and 253 blocked at least one AI crawler.

When your wire release lands on hundreds of low-tier media sites, it hits an ecosystem where many publishers explicitly block answer crawlers or where the crawlers themselves discard duplicate syndicate pages.

Testing whether ChatGPT can see your press release

You do not have to take our word for how answer crawlers handle wire releases. You can test this mechanism directly with a simple string verification test.

Write a press release containing an entirely unique, non-dictionary alphanumeric string, such as a code formatted like REF-89241-VAL. Publish that release through a wire service.

Wait 48 hours for search engines to index the syndication pages. Then open an AI engine that uses live web retrieval, such as Perplexity or ChatGPT with web search enabled. Prompt the model with a task that specifically requires retrieving that unique string:

"Find the reference code included in the recent product announcement for [Company Name] and explain what it applies to."

In almost every case, the answer crawler, such as Perplexity-User or ChatGPT-User, will fail to retrieve the page containing the code, or the model will state that it cannot find reliable sources. Even if Google or Bing indexed the syndicated releases on regional news subdomains, the AI answer pipeline filtered those pages out during its retrieval and synthesis phase.

Earned media versus paid wire distribution

If syndicated press releases do not get your brand cited in AI answers, what does?

The answer is earned media. When a journalist at an industry publication or major news outlet writes an original article about your product, that article possesses three traits that answer crawlers prioritize:

  1. High original domain authority.
  2. Unique, non-duplicated text structure.
  3. Third-party editorial context that validates your brand's claims.

When an answer crawler like ChatGPT-User processes a query about software in your category, it evaluates cited sources for trust and relevance. A feature article on a trusted trade website carries heavy weight in that retrieval pass. A syndicated press release hosted on a regional news affiliate's PR sub-domain carries virtually none.

There is a hard operational trade-off here. Securing earned media requires pitching journalists, building media relationships, and offering genuine news stories. It takes months of dedicated effort, and success is never guaranteed.

Do not buy expensive wire distribution packages under the impression that they offer a shortcut to AI engine visibility. They do not.

Standing is an audit and measurement tool, not a PR agency. We do not write press releases, we do not pitch journalists, and we cannot guarantee media placements or citations in any language model. Anyone who guarantees you a specific citation in ChatGPT is promising something they cannot control, because the engines themselves are non-deterministic.

How to measure your actual presence in AI answers

If you are pursuing earned PR or updating your direct site messaging, you need a reliable way to measure whether AI engines actually recommend your brand.

Because AI models are non-deterministic, running a prompt once in ChatGPT tells you very little. You might run a query at 9:00 AM and see your brand mentioned, then run the exact same query at 9:05 AM and see it omitted.

Competitors in the AI monitoring space run a single prompt query, record whether your brand appeared, and present that single output as a definitive score. That approach gives a false sense of precision because it ignores model variance.

Our method at Standing measures citation stability across five major engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews.

We do not run prompts a single time. We take a fixed prompt basket and execute every prompt five times per question, per engine. We then calculate your citation presence using a Wilson interval to account for variance across runs.

We never report a single integer score without its statistical context. A real measurement looks like a citation score of 34, plus or minus 6, within a 95% confidence interval. This tells you the range where your true baseline visibility lies across repeated generations.

We offer three straightforward pricing tiers to track these metrics:

  • Track: $100 per month for 3 domains.
  • Optimize: $300 per month for 5 domains with custom prompt basket support.
  • Agency: $500 per month for 50 domains with automated monthly re-scanning.

If you are investing time and budget into earned media or brand positioning, measure the outcomes with statistical rigour. Stop paying for syndicated wire releases hoping for direct retrieval gains, and track your actual visibility across repeated prompt runs across every major engine.
