What is Bingbot?
Bingbot is Microsoft's search crawler, and it matters to AI visibility beyond Bing itself because Copilot's web-grounded answers draw on Bing's index, so a page invisible to Bingbot can be invisible to more than one product at once.
Bingbot builds the index behind Bing search, the same role Googlebot plays for Google. Its reach extends further than the Bing homepage: Microsoft Copilot answers questions using Bing's index and live web results, so a page invisible to Bingbot is also invisible to Copilot, not just to bing.com searchers.
The wider implication is that a site's exposure to AI answer engines isn't only a matter of which AI-specific crawlers it allows. Search indexes built for ordinary search, Bing's and Google's, feed into AI products as grounding sources, so a robots.txt audit focused only on bots with names like GPT or Claude in them can miss the crawler doing some of the heaviest lifting.
